How is your profession different from other veterinarians'?
I make house calls and have made them for the past four years. I thought there was going to be a need for it. There are many animals that do not like to travel and people who for some reason don't have time to wait at a clinic or just can't get out of their house.
How does a house call work?
First I try to evaluate the situation over the phone. I run through a survey to determine if the problem is something that I can handle. If not, I'll tell the owner immediately take the animal to an area hospital. Around 80 percent of the medical cases can be fixed with an initial work-up at home.
Is there a vast difference between what you see at a house call and what you see in a clinic?
The interesting part about the house call is that you're seeing the pet in its environment. It's a much more personal relationship, to see where the animal comes from and how he is taken care of. For the most part, I see healthy environments and in some instances, I find the owners will take better care of their pets than they do of themselves.
Is putting an animal ''to sleep,'' the hardest thing you have to deal with?
Yes, euthanasia is so difficult. When you're dealing with the people who've cared for these animals from the beginning, you can't just go in there and perform the procedure. You need to give them options and lead them to a choice that will benefit them most. You look at both the patient and the owner and go from there. Many times it is a family decision.
What is an undisclosed aspect to this profession?
That this is not just an animal profession, it's a people profession, too.
